Deck Railing
Installation
Install code-compliant deck railings that protect your family and define your outdoor space. We work with aluminum balusters, cable systems, glass panels, and composite materials—matched to your deck's style and your budget.
Railings Built to Code, Designed to Last
Deck railings serve two purposes: safety and style. Minnesota building code mandates railings on any deck surface 30 inches or more above grade, with specific requirements for height, baluster spacing, and structural load capacity. We install railings that meet or exceed all code requirements while matching your deck's aesthetic.
Our railing systems use powder-coated aluminum balusters, composite or PVC post sleeves, and stainless steel fasteners rated for exterior use. Every component resists Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and moisture—no annual painting or staining required.
- 36" or 42" heights (code-compliant)
- Aluminum, composite, and PVC materials
- Cable, glass, and traditional baluster infills
- Powder-coated finishes in 20+ colors
- Retrofit installation on existing decks
Types of Deck Railings We Install
Choose from several railing systems based on your view preferences, maintenance tolerance, and budget. We help you select the right combination of posts, rails, and infill materials.
Aluminum Balusters
Powder-coated aluminum balusters paired with composite or wood rails. Available in round, square, and decorative profiles. Zero maintenance and 25-year warranties typical.
Cable Railing
Horizontal stainless steel cables with aluminum or wood posts. Maximizes sightlines and creates a modern aesthetic. Requires periodic tensioning to maintain proper cable tautness.
Glass Panel Railings
Tempered safety glass panels for unobstructed views. Ideal for lakefront or scenic properties. Available in clear, tinted, or frosted options. Wind-resistant and code-compliant.
Wood & Metal Hybrid
Cedar or pressure-treated wood posts and rails with aluminum baluster infills. Traditional appearance with reduced maintenance. Requires periodic staining or sealing of wood components.
Composite Systems
All-composite posts, rails, and sometimes balusters. Color-matched to composite decking brands like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon. Consistent appearance with zero wood maintenance.
Elevated Deck Railings
Engineered for second-story and walkout basement decks. 42" height required for decks over 30" above grade. Reinforced post mounting to meet structural load requirements.
Minnesota Deck Railing Requirements
All deck railings we install meet Minnesota Residential Code requirements. Here's what the code specifies:
Minimum 36" for decks up to 30" above grade. Minimum 42" for decks more than 30" above grade. Measured from deck surface to top of rail.
Maximum 4" between balusters (a 4" sphere cannot pass through). This prevents children from getting stuck or falling through openings.
Rails must withstand 200 lbs concentrated load or 50 lbs/ft distributed load. Posts must resist lateral loads without deflection exceeding code limits.
Stairs require a graspable handrail (1.25" to 2" diameter) continuous along the full stair length, extending beyond top and bottom risers.
